I started playing music games with Guitar Hero III for the Wii. I love the game and still play it regularly. So I picked up Rock Band for the Wii not long ago thinking it couldn't be much different.
I'll say that had I purchased Rock Band first, I may not still be playing music games. This is due almost completely to the Rock Band guitar.
Perhaps I'm biased by having "honed" my game skills on the Guitar Hero guitar, but I just prefer it soooo much to this guitar. The Rock Band guitar's strum bar is so spongy/mushy, that it's hard to tell if your strum has been registered. As opposed to Guitar Hero's whichs clicks when you strum, giving some tactile feedback that you did indeed strum. It doesn't help that many of Rock Band's songs on hard have large sections of fast strumming.
The buttons are okay, and better than the strum bar. But I can't say they're my favorite either.
The guitar looks great, and feels pretty good. It's more appropriately sized than the Guitar Hero guitar and has some heft to it to make it seem more lifelike.
But I can't believe how much more I prefer the Guitar Hero guitar to this. Playing the same song in both games, I do not have fun with the RB guitar and yet want to play the song again and again with the GH guitar.
If you have a PS3 or Xbox360, you have the option of playing RB with the GH guitar and I would recommend it. Us Wii owners don't have that option though. And because of that, I'll be selling RB, not getting RB2, and playing GH, and GHWT as much as possible. And believe me, it doesn't have anything to do with the game, it has everything to do with this guitar. It makes the game unfun for me. Strange, I know, but there it is.
I wanted to like it...I really did. I love music/band games and it never hurts to have more songs and games to play.
Maybe try it before you buy it and see what you think.
