The newest single from NIN has arrived, and despite the fact that it is NIN, it has me annoyed, and for a simple reason. This disc comes with three tracks, the title track being on the With Teeth album (a disc I already own, and have practically wore grooves into since May). This leaves two songs, a DFA remix of Hand That Feeds, and a live version of Love Is Not Enough, two tracks likewise from Teeth. The DFA remix is available on an exclusive vinyl with two other mixes, so having already heard this, the disc lost a bit more merit with me. It's not a bad track, it's just been a bit overplayed in my book, and frankly, if I see one more remix of Hand That Feeds pop up on an official release, I'll go mad, since it has been remixed on the import version of the album as well as on the CD/vinyl of Photek remixes. This leaves Love Is Not Enough. Frankly, I have always loved NIN's live sound, and this is no exception--it sounds much more intense, more human and organic, less mechanical and perfect. The emotion also comes out just that much more, as anyone who has heard the Live album or seen these guys on stage can attest. A decent album cut made that much better, this is a great live rendition, and the only real high point/saving grace of this single.
Not trying to be too much of a griper at the age of 21 and complain without cessation, but this is a real bummer, hot on the heels of the Photek remix of Hand That Feeds (which just doesn't do much for me, despite my love for Modus Operandi and Solaris) especially since it keeps track with the way NIN's imports have been going ever since Halo 13 (Day The World Went Away). Lately, the singles have the title track plus two other cuts that sometimes end up being on the main album later on, or have appeared elsewhere. I remember when singles like Closer To God came out, with GREAT remixes and covers, which sometimes ended up being nearly album-length.
Amazon has another version of this listed, which includes the video for "Only" (or did the last time I checked, anyway)as an addition. For anyone who hasn't seen the video, it might be worth waiting for, but I am not too sore about not having it enclosed here. A pretty dull video, not up there with the shock art of "Closer," very tame and marketable.
In all, this was worth getting since I am a big NIN buff and collect everything I can get my mitts on, but as a fan, its a bit of a disappointment. The song, while good and fun, isn't really packaged with anything that does it justice, and it really isn't marketed in a way to make it stand out. The single is lame, and the video is atrocious. It really is starting to feel like the management and personnel involved are certain they will make money off the loyal fanbase regardless of what kind of garbage is assembled. This is definitely for the diehards only, as 12 bucks for 3 songs isn't really my idea of a fun purchase. With Teeth, however, was worth the wait to me, and well worth the money invested. Let's just hope these guys haven't tamed down too much on stage for when I see them in Jax this fall.
