I bought this for my 7 year old daughter who is really fascinated with rocks and geology right now. I gave her two of the geodes to examine while I put the rest in an old, heavy sock to break apart per the instructions. As is typical with most 7 year olds, she couldn't wait and broke her two geodes open on the sidewalk. We both had a laugh picking up the pieces scattered on the sidewalk. After we broke the remaining geodes apart, my daughter was delighted with the results and we spent a good time examining the open geodes. I would highly recommend this product.

Other reviews said there weren't many exciting crystals to be had from breaking the rocks open. That's correct. Buy this if your kids are desperate for geodes, or mad about rocks. My kids are both, so they were happy with it.
Money might be better spent on admission to a natural history museum.

I bought this item from the Museum of Natural History for $12 and have found similar ones cheaper online. It had about 12 clumps of dirt and the child I bought if for had a great time in his garden smacking them open. They geodes are composed of a thin clay like shell that make it very easy for a child to open. Some were duds and overall the crystals are very small. Do not be fooled by the amethyst displayed on the cover of the box this is obviously not from this set. Still this is a great activity for children and anyone interested in geology. Though I feel this website has made an error in claiming that they cost $95.

I bought two sets. Great idea and my grandkids liked it the excitement of breaking them to see what was inside. The problem was that only two of the geodes were as large as a small walnut the other three were about the size of a nickel with nothing to see inside. Very disappointing.

This kit is a lot of fun for the whole family and very educational. Everyone can learn and have fun at the same time. Each geode can be different inside and it is exciting to open each one to see what you are going to find there.
